June 3, 2015

How To Approach a Mentor Relationship

Know What You Want

Clarify what you want out of the relationship in order to get the most from it. Specify your expectations and the role you need your mentor to take on. Identify your main objective.  Know if you need your mentor to help you academically  or a technical level.  You may only be looking for assistance networking ventures.  Be clear on what you need.

Open Communication

In order to keep you both on the same page, communicate in a clear manner. Communicating your expectations and agreeing  on the level of commitment both parties will engage in is essential to this relationship being beneficial.  Establish how much time and availability is needed to reach your goals.  Plan ahead meetings, and topics to discuss, in order to reach your goals.

Mentorship can come in several different forms.  Find out what works for you and your mentor.  Mentoring relationships are one of the fastest ways to reach success.
