Ready to apply for a job?

Most employers require a job application be completed by an applicant, even if they submit a resume and cover letter. Employers use job applications to ensure that they have consistent information for all candidates.

 

When an applicant signs a job application, or acknowledging online that the information in the application is accurate, the candidate is attesting to their job and educational history. A person can be denied employment or fired in the future if you aren't truthful about your employment record.

 

Review these job application tips to be sure you're prepared to submit an application for employment.

 

Job Application Tips

 

Review Your Employment History. Have your resume or a list of your employment and education history.  Make sure that the correct dates of employment, job titles, and education are listed. Your resume and your job application should match perfectly.

 

Download a Sample Job Application. Download a sample job application.  Practice filling it out so you can be sure you have all the information you need.

 

Ask for an Application.  Ask for an job applicationand take it home to complete. You can take your time so it will be neat and accurate when you return it.

 

Apply In-Person.  Be sure you are dressed appropriately. It's important to look professional, just in case you get an on-the-spot interview.

 

Follow the Instructions. Follow the instructions when completing both online and paper job applications. The most important rule when completing a job application is to follow the directions.  An employer wants to hire someone that can follow instructions.

 

Review Before You Submit. Thoroughly read the instructions and make sure you have completed the application.  Employers will regard applications that are submitted correctly and accurately in a much better light than those from candidates who don't follow the instructions.

 

Be Prepared to Take a Test. Some employers conduct pre-employment tests (talent assessments) to find applicants matching their hiring criteria.  Companies also may require drug tests for applicants for employment.
