Changes For Unemployment Benefits

September 30, 2015

Important changes coming to unemployment benefits delivery options.

LWC encourages first-time claimants to set up direct deposit for faster, safer receipt of benefits.

JPMorgan Chase is ending its debit card service for those receiving unemployment insurance benefits.

On Sunday, September 27, people filing their initial unemployment insurance applications will no longer be able to choose debit cards to receive their benefits. We strongly urge new claimants to choose the direct deposit option to ensure the fastest and most secure means of receiving benefits.

People already receiving benefits on debit cards will lose that means beginning October 27. We strongly urge existing claimants to update their banking preferences in HiRE to the direct deposit option to ensure the fastest and most secure means of receiving benefits before October 27. Existing claimants will still be able to use their debit cards after October 27; however, no new money will be deposited on the cards.

Any claimants who do not choose the direct deposit option will receive their benefits via paper checks mailed to the address we have on file, adding several days of delays and potential security risks. All claimants can update their banking preferences at any time by logging into their HiRE accounts, clicking “Unemployment Services” and selecting “Update Banking Information.”

Claimants may contact the Louisiana Workforce Commission toll-free with any questions or concerns at 1-866-783-5567.
